About Us

OUR HISTORY

About Us

Honoring our past. Serving our present. Building our future.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse was born out of a shared vision of service, unity, and community spirit. On October 4, 1963, Sheriff Knox L. McRea and eight dedicated citizens came together to form a nonprofit organization that would not only strengthen local law enforcement partnerships but also promote the timeless values of horsemanship and youth development.

Not long after its founding, the Posse found its home — a beautiful 20-acre property at 1801 Vest Road in Hartselle, Alabama, nestled just off Highway 31 and minutes from I-65. This land became more than just an address; it became a gathering place for fellowship, service, and compassion.

As the years passed, the Posse’s purpose grew far beyond its original mission. What began as a small group of horsemen evolved into a powerful force for good — serving more than 1,600 special needs adults and children in our community through annual events like the Special Needs Rodeo, the largest of its kind in Alabama. Each year, buses line up for miles, filled with smiling faces eager to enjoy a day of fun, laughter, and love at the Posse grounds.

The Posse’s spirit of giving has extended well beyond county lines. When hurricanes struck the Carolinas, members and neighbors rallied to collect food, water, clothing, and other essential supplies. In true Posse fashion, three trucks — one carrying 54,000 pounds of aid — rolled out with a Sheriff’s car leading the way, delivering hope to those in need.

Over the decades, the organization has continued to grow and evolve, officially earning 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2016. Today, under the leadership of Sheriff Ron W. Puckett (elected January 19, 2019), the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office includes 49 deputies, 6 office staff, 65 jailers, 19 reserves, 17 auxiliary members, and 25 Posse members — all carrying forward the same heart for service that started it all in 1963.

From its humble beginnings to its lasting legacy, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse remains a proud symbol of what can be accomplished when a community comes together — neighbors helping neighbors, with compassion, courage, and a commitment to serve.

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

Our Members

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is made up of 25 dedicated members from all walks of life — from firefighters and police officers to retired broadcasters and homemakers. Each member brings unique skills, talents, and a shared passion for serving the community.

Membership dues are just $10 per year, which includes a Posse T-shirt, membership card, and plenty of opportunities to get involved. From event support to hands-on community projects, there’s always meaningful work to do and a place for everyone to serve.

Posse members are more than volunteers — they’re part of a family with a mission. Every member contributes their time, energy, and abilities to support local events, community outreach, and emergency response efforts throughout Morgan County and beyond.

Of the 25 members, 10 are fully trained and qualified mounted riders, ready to assist the Sheriff’s Office whenever duty calls. Led by Melissa Farr, an accomplished horsewoman and leader, the mounted unit continues to reach new levels of skill and readiness — including supporting search and rescue operations at a moment’s notice.
